Global Climate Change

Climate change is the main environmental challenge that humans face. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, most of which are generated by industrial and transportation activities.

In Mexico, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Environment Canada and FUMEC have joined forces in order to develop measurement tools and methodologies to estimate GHG emissions and identify opportunities to reduce its emissions. The goal is that these approaches can be used by different industrial sectors.

In 2006, a tool to measure GHG emissions in the pulp and paper sector was adapted to Mexican industry. With this experience FUMEC initiated its contact with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to elaborate a methodology for estimating GHG emissions and criteria pollutants to be used in the power generation sector.

This project is added to the partnership between SEMARNAT and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to adopt a GHG emissions measuring protocol, an international model designed to estimate and report industry generated emissions and contribute in this way to reduce the damages caused by climate change.
