A new MEMS Innovation Laboratory was inaugurated in Mexico PDF Print

On Monday April 19th a brand new MEMS Innovation Laboratory (LI-MES in Spanish) was inaugurated. This laboratory belongs to the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) that is part of the Mexican National Council on Science and Technology (CONACYT).

With the opening of these premises Mexico became one of the few countries with capacity to create micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). Also, the LI-MEMS is unique in Latin America given that only Stanford and Berkeley universities in the U.S.A. count with similar facilities.

Despite being a very novel technology, MEMS have shown to be very useful in a wide range of fields such as telecommunications, computer technology, automotive industry and medical devices, among many others.

Jointly efforts of several actors were central for the execution of this project. The State Government of Puebla as well as the Ministry of Economy and the INAOE itself contributed with the resources for the LI-MEMS construction, while the Motorola Company donated equipment estimated in about a million US dollars.

The idea to create the LI-MEMS emerged in 2004 when FUMEC proposed to establish a network of research institutions to promote the design and production of MEMS prototypes. For this reason, the Foundation acted as facilitator of interactions among participant institutions along its implementation.
