With the aim to create an space of collaboration and feed back between the Ibero-American countries, for second occasion was undertake an international event entitled Ibero-American MEMS Meeting. The organization was in charge of the United States-Mexico Foundation for Science, with the support of institutions such as the Universidad Veracruzana, the Mexican Secretary of Economy the university of Texas at Arlington and the National Science Foundation of the United States The main objectives of the meeting were: Disseminate information on the national strategy for the development of MEMS technologies in Mexico. Promote and facilitate meetings with specialist and leaders of MEMS of different countries. Analyze the design and development of Microsystems consortiums. Showcase the strategies and case of success on MEMS in Latin American countries and propitiate collaboration actions among the participating institutions and countries. Show the entrepreneurs the opportunities represented by this technologies, which include the automotive, power, health, packaging, and other sectors.
The meeting had 170 participants, which included 30 international distinguished speakers from countries, such as Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, Colombia, and Mexico. The participants represented different sectors, 30 universities, 7 research centers, 6 science and technology state councils, 2 economic development ministries, 3 state governments, and 8 industries.
Important personalities from Mexican Academia made the opening remarks at the workshop. They included the Public Education and Culture Minister from the state of Veracruz, the president of The Universidad Veracruzana, the Director of the Technological Innovation and Training Program of the Ministry of Economy, the Deputy Director of the Network for Research Centers at CONACYT, the Director of the Automation & Robotics Research Institute of The University of Texas at Arlington, and the Director of the MESA program from Sandia National Laboratories.
The most important topics in the meeting agenda were as follows: I. Experiences in Microsystems technology development in the United States and Canada II. Microsystems technology in Ibero-American countries III. Businesses based on MEMS technology IV. Education infrastructure for MEMS V. Government programs to support Science, Technology and Innovation
These topics were included in the keynote talks and highlighted the successful MEMS strategies implemented in Canada, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and technological developments in Costa Rica, Spain, Argentina, as well as some universities in the United States. One of the most remarkable presentations was that of the Mexican National Strategy on MEMS, promoted by the Mexico-U.S. Foundation for Science and supported by the Economy Ministry and the National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT). The integration of the MEMS Design Centers Network and the MEMS Productive Articulation Center are among the most valued accomplishments of this strategy. The latter center is dedicated to supporting entrepreneurial competitiveness among different sectors, through the use and implementation of these new technologies and based on the concept of strategic articulation among enterprises and MEMS design centers. Distinguished speakers at the workshop included Dr. Dan Gale, from the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation (CMC), Steven Walsh from Micro and Nano Technology Commercia liz ation Foundation (MANCEF), Regan Stinnett from the Sandia National Labs, Qing Ma from Intel, and Robert Carlson from Honeywell-Minnesota. Well known speakers from universities like the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Nuevo Mexico, the University of Texas at San Antonio, also had an active participation in workshop. Another important aspect of the workshop featured multidisciplinary roundtables for several sectors, such as Energy, Health, Automotive, Packaging, Foundries, and others more general, including the Ibero-American consortium and collaboration on the MEMS technology roundtables.
